Using Emojis to sort your Google Drive

In this short video, Kasey Bell demonstrates how to use emojis in your Google folders and files.  Not only is it a nice visual clue, but it also changes the sorting rules- and emojis go to the top! While we don’t have access to all the emoji sites she mentions, the Windows+ . - does work! 🏆

All you ever wanted to know about Jamboard.

Alice Keeler has a new Teaching with Jamboard.  In this blog post, she provided an in-depth tutorial of all things Jamboard.  This is one of the tools I think I will use when we are back in the classroom with all our students.

Where you can put the images

Google has a new option when placing images in a Google Doc- you can now place the images behind the text!

First, insert an image and then select it.  Below the image, you will see a series of placement options.

The last two are new either behind or in front of the text!

Adding checkboxes in Google Docs

A new option in Google Docs will allow you to add checkboxes (and check them off-I will admit this is one of my favorite features in Keep!).  Just go to the checkbox icon to get started.

Mute that tab (in Chrome)

It is easy to silence a tab (in case you are on a call and don’t want your email notification to be disruptive).  Here is a quick video from Kasey Bell (from ShakeUpLearning) that you can use or share with your students.

The Getty Collection

I am always on the lookout for student-friendly image sites. The Getty Collection was recently included in a TeachersFirst image review.  Here’s how they describe their collection:

The collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum comprises Greek, Roman, and Etruscan art from the Neolithic to Late Antiquity; European art—including illuminated manuscripts, paintings, drawings, sculpture, and decorative arts—from the Middle Ages to the early twentieth century; and international photography from its inception to the present day.

When the time comes…

As we get closer to closing out the school year, it’s time to think about cleaning up Google Classroom.  In this blog post from Sarah Kiefer, she shares several short videos and suggestions.  Topics (with videos that I felt were most important) are Returning Assignments and Archiving Classroom (Slide 5) and Cleaning up your Google Calendar (Slide 6).

Google Meet Overview

Here’s a comprehensive blog post from Kasey Bell (ShakeUpLearning) with a Google Meet overview. She does note when upgrades are required (our district does not have the paid version, so we will not have those features).  It does cover the upcoming updates.
