ChatGPT for Teachers

Chat GPT is blocked in my district- but that doesn’t stop me from using it at home!  I’ve seen several articles recently on how prompt engineering (i.e., how you ask the question) directly impacts the quality of the output.  From Hello Teacher Lady, here is a list of 50 time-saving prompts for educators. From strategy suggestions to reflection/feedback ideas- you will find something you can use.

Media Literacy

This has been a hot topic for several years- how do we help our students read and think crucially with an ever-increasing amount of media.  PBS shares some lessons/resources to help you get started.  While many lessons are geared to the 6-12 classrooms, there are also a few suggestions for younger grades.  Could you spot a deep fake

How teachers violate copyright

Can you guess the top 10 ways teachers might (inadvertently) violate copyright rules? (That Disney movie better be for educational and not entertainment reasons.) In her blog post, Alice Keeler not only lists the ways (and the ways) but also suggests solutions to each case.

A poem with only one vowel

Have you heard of lipograms?   It is a work where the writer deliberately omits certain letters.  I found this unique poetry type in Betsy Potash’s blog post. Here the students created using only one vowel.  Even though the post was written with high schoolers in mind, I think you could adapt her lesson (in the blog she shares a Google Doc with step-by-step directions)  for younger students. The video above is from her lesson plan.

The Poetry Machine

Here’s a poetry suggestion from Nancy Bosch (Stonybrook Elementary School). She shares

But it looks like you need The Poetry Machine link!

This was the coolest way to get kids to write poetry…

I love that it first explains the style of poetry, gives an example, and then lays out the template for them to follow.

If Kahoot and a Slide show had a baby

You would have a Curipod.  This AI (artificial intelligence) driven site allows you to specify the topic and grade level and then ask Curipod to do magic- you will have a slide presentation with open-ended, word clouds, and polls, and more within minutes.
You get the data on the student responses if you like.  In addition, you can select the type of slides (open discussion, poll questions, check-in, and more). As with all AI sites, you need to review the content- but this will give you a head start.  You can create a free account and get started (you can make 5 with a free account).  Use it as an introduction or a review! Special thanks to Mrs. Tomas-Paiva’s class for trying this with me.
