Using art in the classroom

While Alice Keeler's post is titled Adapt to ChatGPT with Art, I found her suggestions useful for other classes (not just those concerned with ChatGPT papers).  She shares some specific examples of how students can demonstrate their knowledge with art projects.

Are you looking for elementary art ideas, lesson plans, and podcasts?  Look no further than The Art of Education University.  Here you will find various resources including the Everyday Art Room and their podcasts.

Art in the content areas

While I am far from an art expert, I do enjoy it and this article spoke to me.  Larry Ferlazzo suggests several ways to integrate art in the content areas (I always remember that Boston Massacre woodcut and having my students compare perspectives). Please check out his ideas here.

It’s YAM time!

March is YAM (Youth Art Month)  and TeachersFirst has prepared a special topics page with many resources.  There is something for every grade level from museum resources to online tools.

Looking for art, math, and science videos?

You might want to jump-start your students by looking at OK GO.  Not familiar with the group? Check out this NPR article for some background. They have partners with the Playful Learning Lab (the University of St. Thomas) to showcase their work in the OK Go Sandbox. Here you will see the backstory to their videos as well as educational resources and project ideas.

Free Art lessons

The Met for Kids!

One of the things I found interesting in this art site from the Metropolitan Museum was the section Made by kids.  I viewed several short videos produced by students- it might provide some ideas/inspiration for your own class! Go on the Blvrd

You know- the online art tour Boulevard  (BLVRD). Here you can explore a variety of museum artworks and read (or listen) to the commentary- I like to listen since I can view the image at the same time.  For a complete review, please see TeachersFirst here.

Art and science via origami

What do origami animals and telescope lenses have in common?  How about origami and heart valve stents?  Fran Mayer shared this Ted Talk (by Robert Lang)  and in it, you will find the answers!  Interesting combination of art and science! (STEAM well before it was in fashion).

The Philadelphia Art Museum is not just for art- they have lesson plans for ELA, Science, Social Studies and Math!  Check out the posting on TeachersFirst.
