The New York Times provides a great variety of classroom resources- and no newspaper subscription is required.  Here is a blog post outlining their material. It is geared to middle and high school students but you can adapt some for younger learners.  My favorites are the picture prompts and the word of the day!

Inspiration from young writers

The  New York Times just published their young writers’ essays.  These short essays written by teenagers are a quick read- and I found them very inspiring.  Maybe you could share with your young writers.

Then what are 40 photos worth?  In this blog post from the NYTimes, they share the group of “What’s going on in this photo”- a great series of photo prompts.  The article also includes teaching suggestions and resources. (The photo above is part of the collection).

While many of the New York Times Learning Centers sites are geared for older students, the photo prompts would work for all students.  Here’s the link to the daily picture prompt.

Vocabulary in 15 seconds

The New York Times recently published the winners of their Vocabulary videos.  Students were challenged to create a 15-second video to define one of the NYT words of the day.  The results are here.    Maybe this could be a project for your students (and you could show some of these as examples).  While some are high tech, others are not. And how would this work in a foreign language class? I bet paper slides would work as well. Let me know if you would like to try it!

Using the NYT and Graphs (with Google Sheets)

Part of the NYT Learning Network is What’s going on in the graph?  Alice Keeler has taken this one step further and imported the graph into a spreadsheet and then opened for comments.  Please see her blog post here. This sounds like a great way to integrate math in the real world and provide a voice for each student.
