What I am Thankful for

  

Eric Curts has reshared this ``What I am thankful for” project in his post here.  I did this last year with several classes and the students like it.  It also gave me a chance to teach some basic slide tools. Eric provides the template and directions in the post along with a video tutorial.

Looking for Thanksgiving Resources?

Are you looking for Thanksgiving resources?  Check out this curated list from TeachersFirst.  My favorite is the Plimoth Plantation- it’s something I used in my fifth-grade class.

How are your students thankful?

Using this idea from Eric Curts, your students can create a Google Slide turkey with all their thanks.  Eric provides a template you can copy and complete directions.  While he suggests using Mote to record, I would try Screencastify.  Once the students create their slides, have them make a screencast and record their thoughts.  To make it easier, you could assign it via Screencastify Submit.  Here are the student directions for recording a screencast.

 Kathleen Mc Dade’s preschool class created a ChatterPIX with their hand made turkeys.  Please listen to their voices as they share what they are thankful for.  ChatterPix and iMovie are perfect together.  Consider leaving them a comment on this post.

Lead a discussion about what the students learned from the resources
above and how storytelling can shape history. Were there any parts of
the Thanksgiving story that surprised them? Any myths they’ve thought
were true until now? Use the strategy Myth Bustin’ (Canadian Version)
to solidify their learning. As an extension, allow the students to develop
their own statements to add depth to the exercise. Then, gather students
around tables to build excitement for the holiday with an adaptation of
the strategy Paper Chat (Canadian Version). For this activity, provide
some questions about the history of Thanksgiving and some questions
that will prepare students to start conversations and storytelling
around their own dinner tables over the holiday break. Share your

Our Thanksgiving K-5 Lesson Starter (U.S. and Canada)

So many times I find a resource, or see an SOS that I would like to try, but I'm

lost on how to really bring it to life in my classroom. Lesson starters are the

perfect jumping off point for incorporating digital media into the classroom in

a meaningful way without having to stay up until all hours the night before

starting a lesson to prepare, cut out, make copies, etc.

One of my favorites is the Lesson Starter for Multiplication (U.S. and Canada)

for grades 6-8. I really wish my 6th grade math teacher would have had

something like this...I feel like I would have enjoyed math so much more than I do now.

I also love that Lesson Starters are perfect for new teachers by offering a

ready-made guide for using Discovery Education resources, but at the

same time, can be used by even the most veteran teacher who is wanting

to find a new way to introduce something that has been taught the same way year after year.

Kathy James shared this: “Kahoot has a cute Thanksgiving Day game set up.... we played it yesterday.... kids got a laugh and kept fact checking. The answers were right but surprising.”  This might be something you can use next week- access Kahoot and you will find several games.
